Near the thumb-scoop there appears to be a small crack running parallel to the case (follows the curve of the scoop) and is about the length of the trackpad button. It is only small but is there something I can do without replacing the entire case?
You have to show it to your local Apple Service Provider. I some cases Apple will repair the MacBook.

I see, so the top case actually has a crack in it. For a complete fix you will need to replace this. You can use this guide to carry it out.
If the crack is on the keyboard then they’ll repair it at no cost. They said it is recognized as a design flaw. However if the crack is anywhere else then you’ll have to pay for it
I have the same problem with my black macbook, I use black electrical tape to cover it, it’s the perfect color, if you have a white macbook you could use white electrical tape.
