Today I opened my MacBook just to see that there’s a crack in it. The crack stretches upward, just touching the screen (this is hard to see) and I don’t know what to do. I don’t have applecare and it’s not really something I’d like to spend upwards of a hundred dollars on. Can I close my MacBook? What should I do? (Note- I’ve never closed it especially hard, dropped it, carried it by the screen, closed it with something in it, etc)
Ouch! You damaged the chin plate. For now place some tape over it so the glass shards don’t fall out and it will help you in removing it to replace it. This was likely caused by something caught between the keyboard and the lid it could be as simple as a paperclip! You do need to be careful as just under it is the ribbon cables which interconnect to the logic board below. Here is the part 13” 2016 ~ 2019 Retina Chin Plate You’ll also need Tesa 61395 Tape - Card ‘‘We don’t have a 13” guide but this guide is exactly the same Replace the LOGO Baffle on the screen with the MacBook Pro 15 “Touch Bar 2017 logo
