My specs are: zotac gtx 970, intel i5 6500, two sticks of 4gb crucial 2133 mhz ddr4 ram, 500gb samsung 850 evo ssd, 2tb seagate barracuda hdd, msi h170 pc mate, and corsair h60 cooler, with a evga 500b psu. I was using my pc in the morning and it was working fine with no abnormalities. When I tried to turn it on later that day, I heard the fans start spinning but no beeps from my mobo and no boot. Currently I am running a test bench style with my mobo sitting on my cpu box to eliminate the possibility of a short resulting from the case. Unfortunately, the error LED for the cpu is on when I turn on my computer and it is still not booting. What should I do?

Hi @eggo5 , The CPU led indicates either the cpu is not detected or has failed. Did you try to reset the BIOS just in case it is a corrupted BIOS problem? This is from the motherboard user manual: Resetting BIOS to default values:

  1. Power off the computer and unplug the power cord
  2. Use a jumper cap to short JBAT1 for about 5-10 seconds.
  3. Remove the jumper cap from JBAT1.
  4. Plug the power cord and power on the computer. If that doesn’t work perhaps you should check if the PSU is supplying the correct voltages to the motherboard. To do this disconnect the AC power from the computer and then disconnect all the power cables from the PSU to the motherboard and associated hardware i.e. GPU card, HDD etc. Next on the 24 pin power connector from the PSU short out pins 16 -17 using a bent paper clip (or similar- see image below, usually pin 16 is a green wire but it can vary). Reconnect and switch on the AC power to the computer. The PSU should turn on (PSU fan should turn on) and you can now test the various voltages supplied by the PSU to the 24 pin connector (and the 8 pin connector) using a DMM’s voltmeter function. The 12V supplies should be OK as you say that the fans are working, but check them all anyway.. Of more interest is the +3.3V and the +5V
