I was having issues with the power button working on an iPhone 5 so I purchased both the cable and button replacements from ifixit. I see that my original button has a copper piece in the circle indentation while the new one does not. Does the copper piece have any function? Why does the replacement part leave it off? Nothing else looks to be wrong with my power button, but I wanted to understand this before replacing it or replacing the associated cables. Thank you, Karl Schneider

Is the copper piece missing entirely or is it replaced with a silver/metallic piece instead. Do you mean this part? The button has a metallic nipple underneath, that presses against the actuator on the button flex. The “click” signal is passed along to the logic board via the two copper pads on the flex.
