QUICK BACK STORY: Wife spilled water and went into the laptop from the backside. Did not shutoff immediately- shutoff approx 1min later with a flicker then turning off. She immediately tried using a hair drier to it for only a minute. She did put on charger thinking it would boot. This is when she got me and I immediately put the laptop in an A (Tent) and let sit for 48hrs- not attached to power source. AFTER 48HRS: I tried to power up the laptop without power and it went through a partial boot then shut back down; Attached charger and still nothing. FROM THERE— Complete motherboard teardown and cleaned the board with 91% alcohol (highest percentage I can get during NYC Quarantine amidst COVID-19). Located water damage on the backside of the board. Cleaned the board completely with alcohol and reassembled. Unit powered up while on power source; powers off immediately once disconnected. Wife tried editing a video in Adobe Premier Pro and the laptop powers down while editing, even while on the power source…I’ve run Diagnostics — “The battery will need to be replaced soon.”I’ve done an SMS & PRAM Reset, both with no results. Any/all help will be greatly appreciated. I’m pretty technically savvy. Willing to test what I’m capable of. Update (04/15/2020) UPDATE — Changed out the logic board as per. what @danj had suggested may be the problem. The issue remains. I again SMS/PRAM Reset, but nothing. The laptop still shuts off when detached from the power source; also it restarts when in load while using Adobe Premiere Pro. No fan sound of heavy load either- diagnostic does not say the fan is failing. Some additional info that may be of use [?] ; Laptop does not fully boot when attached to an off-brand Apple Mag Charger. It almost loads all the way, but powers off. When laptop is on the power-source it DOES NOT move from 97% (it actually said 99% with the other logic board). Any/all info or advice will be hugely appreciated. Thanks. Update (04/18/2020) PROBLEM WAS FIXED. Given the battery information, @danj ‘s advice to change the battery fixed the problem completely. — Gave the original Logic Board one last alcohol bath; swapped out the battery. Problem was fixed. I’m guessing the water shorted out the what was left of the life of the battery.
Your system logic board needs repairs. The charging logic is damaged. As far as why your wife’s using Adobe Premier Pro to edit a vid having the system shut down also makes sense! What many people don’t know is the needed power for heavy apps like Adobe Premier Pro can’t run off the MagSafe alone. The charger is just that a charger not a replacement for a dead battery or when the battery is unable to power the system. Sure, low power apps will work, its when you push the system too far it will fail. Are you able to get to Brooklyn? Give Louis a call Rossmann Repair Group I’m sure he can help you.
