I was watching a movie on my laptop while it was charging, aftermarket charger, not an Apple unit. I then heard a pop and my computer went dead and the charging cord smelt of something burning. I unplugged it from the wall and my computer safely. I turned my computer on and everything was fine apart from the date and time. Now it started to die and we didn’t want to use the old cord to try to charge so I borrowed a real Apple charging cord and it wouldn’t charge the computer, I tried numerous plugs but nothing. I have my life literally on my computer, my family photos videos and more. I’m not sure what to do if I let Apple try to fix it, or if there is a way to access my hard drive from a dead computer?
The question here is do you want to fix your system or look at getting a newer model (new or used). Depending on what model you have there is a large possibility you can remove your HD out of your current system and place the drive into an external HD case so you can access the files on it that way from a new computer. It is also possible your system could be repaired. Does it still meet your needs? And how much are you willing to spend on fixing it?
