I am about to order the Crucial MX500 2 TB SSD but it says that This drive requires a SATA III controller. What is that and where do i get it ? Thank you
A SATA controller is a part of the logic board (in this case) which is capable of handling communications from a connected SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) device. Basically it’s the part of your board that handles storage functions. The III just means it’s the third version. I can’t be certain of the generation, but more than likely this already exists on your iMac. It definitely has a SATA controller since that’s what your existing hard drive is using. Typically it will work even on earlier revisions of the SATA standard, just at slower speeds. Although I have known others that have used Crucial SSDs in these without issue. You can also use Crucial’s tool to make sure it’s compatible, but I doubt you’ll have a problem.
