Chosen Solution
Basically the problem is this: I can load most PS3 games into my CECH-2101B PS3 and they start up just fine. However BD movies and PS3 games that are dual-layer (aside from GTA5 for some reason) do not unless I physically lift the console and hold it vertically (with the disc drive pointing upwards). Is this a laser issue and can I fix it by swapping the laser?
It just needed a new laser. Done and done.
This is very similar to the problem that a lot of PS2s (Primarily Slims) had where they would only read certain discs unless the console was in a certain position. The fix for those was a new laser, so based on the symptoms you have provided, we can safely assume it’s the laser. One thing I would check though is to make sure it actually spins properly if it does, then I would try the laser. If it doesn’t, then there’s a problem with the drive and it would probably have to be replaced.
