So I finally charged my old iPod after YEARS of not using it. It still works great, battery life is pretty sound. I don’t have the old charger for it anymore, so I’ve been using my iPad 3rd gen charger. I noticed growing cracks on the plastic face plate. I would assume that it was just heat or pressure from when it was in storage, but I’ve noticed the number and length of the cracks increase after each charge. There doesn’t appear to be any puffing when I look at the outside, and currently don’t have the parts to open it up. I know I will have to replace the face. But what is causing the cracks? Is the battery just too old? I don’t want this to happen again once I replace the parts.

Sounds like the battery is the issue. Its likely after being in storage for so long that is had just died. You would need to replace the battery if you intend to do the screen aswell as nothing will fit back together with a battery that has bulged… not very safe either
