Can you swap the mainboard in the 64gb 6gb (slate grey) version of the phone, with the mainboard from a 128gb 8gb (midnight black) version of the phone. Will that work?
Yes you should be able to but be careful. They may come from a donor device that could be carrier locked or have google FRP.
