When trying to disassemble le the speaker, I am trying to take out the dust filter. And I noticed it had a metal contact on it, with a cable going onto the base of the phone. What does this metal contact do and is it safe to cut it out? I thought it was only a grill stopping dust getting into the actual speaker itself? Update (01/25/2020)

That’s your other microphone, used for beamforming so the phone picks up your voice better. The mic is connected to the dock flex, you just destroyed your whole dock flex. What you should be doing is just pull the speaker grill off it, it’s just secured with adhesive.
