I have an old MacBook Pro (3,1), 17", with the 1680x1050 internal display (A1229). I was wondering if I could replace it with an 1920x1200 display. I am not sure if Apple have made some deliberate action to make such upgrade impossible. No guesses please, I cannot afford buying a display that I cannot use. I can see an answer for a1212, but mine isn’t that type, so I’m hoping for a different answer. (There someone said that Apple has blocked the display type in the ROM, so it disables the display if it finds that it was upgraded.)
I guess I have found my (unwelcome) answer once I have found the page of the 1920x1200 display: IMPORTANT: This LCD is only compatible with MacBook Pro 17" laptops that are model A1261 and shipped with LED displays and a 1920x1200 resolution. Although visually identical, this part will not work in the Low-Res CCFL 1680x1050 Models. The LCD for the low-res model can be found here.
