Chosen Solution

I have a late 2009 27inch i7 IMAC with 1 TB. I want to upgrade my IMAC to a 4TB and 32GB RAM. Can my Imac handle it? And if yes. Do you have any recommendation for a 4TB drive? I am considering a WD 4TB drive. But I don’t know which color to choose. Any recommendations? Thanks you!

Here’s a good write up on what the differences are within the Western Digital family of drives: Understanding the WD Rainbow. Be aware your system has a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) interface. You’ll need to make sure the drive you do get is compatible. A SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) drive which does not offer a means to run at SATA II speed will not work reliably here. Make sure your systems firmware is up to date. Follow this Apple T/N: About EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Mac computers. You need to be at this level or newer.

I was successful in upgrading to a 4 TB Western Digital Black. Yes, it will work. Heads up though! Your fans may rev up at the maximum RPM after your upgrade, you will need a programs such as SSD fan control to regain fan sanity. This one’s my personal favorite. http://exirion.net/ssdfanctrl/
