I have an iphone 6 that is completely destroyed. My client wants to try and recover the photos. I have the iphone open and can access the internal storage. Is there a device or tool I can plug these memory chips into so I can read them? Some type of USB card reader?
Nope, the data is encrypted on the NAND memory IC so even if you have physical access to it, you will only read gibberish. The only way to get data off an iPhone is to repair it. It doesn’t have to be fully functional…it just needs to work enough to boot into iTunes and allow the entering of a password (if necessary). When that’s not possible, you can always try to migrate the paired IC’s (CPU, Baseband, NAND, EEPROM) to a working board but that is easier said than done. So the best bet is to send this phone to an experienced micro-solderer, preferably one who specializes in data recovery and complex cases.
