Chosen Solution

My 2013 came with the 256GB Pci Flash drive. I want to add another SATA SSD, can I do this? I just want it as a separate drive and I don’t plan on any kind of raid setup. Since it did not come with a SATA drive from the factory will there be power and data connections?

Yes, indeed you can! Just follow the guide here. You can choose to add either a 3.5" HDD/SSHD/SSD-HDD combo, or a 2.5" HDD/SSD/SSHD, but I don’t believe there are SSD-HDD combo drives in that format.

Yes, you can add in a 2.5" SATA SSD drive. But, there are some issues you’ll encounter. Before you even think about doing this review this IFIXIT guide: iMac Intel 27" EMC 2639 Logic Board Replacement. Sadly you’ll need to remove the logic board to gain access to the SATA header block to take the SSD drive only plug off and plug in the needed SATA cable. Makes sure you use the correct tools to take the display off as many people damage it in the process of taking it off which would be an expensive mistake! I would recommend you get some spare adhesive strips before you start as well. The needed SATA cable: Intel iMac 27" Late 2013 Hard Drive Cable - Apple PN 923-0312You’ll need a special inline thermal sensor adapter: OWC Complete HD/SSD Upgrade Kit Including Tools for all 27" iMacs 2012 & Later. And you’ll need a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter frame: OWC 2.5" to 3.5" Drive Adapter Bracket. Your other choice here is to just swap out your current PCIe SSD with a larger one.
