I have viewed the instructions on upgrading the internal HD to new SSD hard drive. Can I use an external SSD drive after cloning existing old drive, as the primary drive for use?

Well the answer is yes & no here ;-} Yes, you can use an external drive as your primary drive but it would need to be connected via FireWire not USB. USB in this series is just too slow (USB2). Even still, FireWire is slower than what your internal SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) but not by much. I’m guessing here you don’t want to upgrade your internal drive as it’s a bit of work, which is fully understandable.
