I saw some cable modems by different brands. Can you use and would it work if you use a cable modem by a different brand and opt out to not use your Internet Service Provider’s cable modem? Would you Internet Service Provider allow that? I heard from others that these ISP’s such as Verizon charge a monthly fee for their cable modems.
It depends on the ISP. You’ll need to review their approved list of modems to pick the one you’ll need to get to be compatible with your ISP’s signal. ComCast allows you to substitute your own (which I think is the best way to go). With ComCast if you use their modem you also offer out a second AP for ComCast roaming users. Which could impact your usage throughput, as an example in the city where I live we have over 30 modems active near me, 10 offer guest access so I could steal their bandwidth to do some heavy download and still use mine for other stuff, which is nice for me ;-} Just not so nice if you are trying to do something that also needs bandwidth at the same time as I stole yours ;-{ Setup is quite easy, you’ll need to call them when you connect it up so they can enable it from their side. Don’t forget to alter the setup password as you don’t want your router to be overtaken by someone.
