This happened suddenly, there was no water damage or shock damage. When pressing the power button the camera clicks but the screen does not turn on. When holding the power button the screen flashes rhythmically, but does not properly turn on. The camera chargers with no problem, photos transfer to the computer with no problem. When plugged into the charger or computer the screen works fine as usual, but when unplugged won’t turn on. What could be the problem?

Hi, From your description it sounds as though the camera’s battery is failing to hold its charge and is probably failing. This seems to be confirmed by you saying that it works OK with the charger connected or when it is connected to a PC. Try installing a new battery. (Fully charge it before using the camera) Even rechargeable batteries have a life span.

@Lee Ricketts, As you didn’t say what you’ve tried, can you charge the camera battery in the camera? If not is the battery inserted the correct way or have you tried a different compatible charger? (see image)

(click on image to enlarge for better viewing) Not sure with your camera but a lot of cameras have a micro switch that is operated by the battery door when it is closed which “tells” the control board that the battery is inserted OK. You may be able to see the switch with the battery door open and listen if it operates when gently pushing it with a screwdriver, simulating the door closing.

I have had some issues with this, and for some reason my camera powers on more reliably when using the ‘play button to power on’ setting. Also, holding down the menu button when I turn the camera on and off seems to help. Just pressing the power button doesn’t seem to do anything anymore, which is frustrating but at least there is a workaround (for now).
