When I go to the camera app the shutter stays closed and does not open whats wrong?

have you dropped the iphone? sounds like the camera needs replacing, but first I’d try a hard reset.. hold home and power together for 10 seconds until the apple appears and then release buttons and allow to reboot. If this doesn’t work then I’d look for a new part (fairly cheap) and follow the guide here iPhone 3GS Camera Replacement

I too had this problem, turned out connector wasn’t in properly on back of logic board. Refitted it put it back together now works perfectly

my camera strip will damage, then I’ll change the camera but shutter not open

my shutter on my 3gs is stuck on shut, tried all the surgestions available even striped my phone down to the bare bones, Nothing, so bought a new camara and guess what, NOTHING, STILL THE SAME, seems like no one seems to know what causes it.

This was driving me crazy for the longest time. I’ve tried many things but what worked for me was to just keep your browser history cleared, any cache as well. My cam has been working reliably ever since. This may not solve your problem, but it might! Good luck!
