One night, played a long session of GTAV for 12 hours. My laptop gets pretty warm during playing. When I was feeling drowsy, I closed the lid of laptop, but forgot to close the game. I reopened the lid, to see a glowing orange glow and a burning smell from that region in the corner of my laptop in the crack between the keyboard and laptop monitor. I opened up my laptop but saw nothing that looked burned, or blackened. I tried the main 3 methods already on YouTube that deal with the black screen: The discharging method didn’t fix the black screen. The ram stick method didn’t fix the black screen. (However, 3 weeks ago, I did install another 8GB of DRAM)Using the HDMI cable, the display works with the external monitor. I tried unplugging the HDMI cable to see if it’s a backlight inverter issue. The back light doesn’t appear to be the problem, because I don’t see any faint image on the screen with a flashlight. I researched at it seems like a black screen could be a variet of issues: motherboard, GPU, backlight inverter, the screen itself, and I believed I narrowed it down to either the screen itself, but am scared to spend $74 for a LCD screen replacement and installing it improperly, when I could by another laptop. Some more background: I had small purple streaks/flickering on my screen, when I adjusted the angle of my laptop, for about 6 months, around January 2017. So I am not surpeised that the mnitor suddenly “burned out,” but in amore dramatic way than I expected. I have had this laptop since 2014 (for 3 years). Make and Model: ASUS N550JK Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i&-4700HQ CPU @ 2.40GHz Installed memory (RAM): 16.0 GB System type: 64-bit OS
By the sounds of things you’ve over heated some component in the display or damaged display cables, at this point I’d recommend a full display replacement. You could try replacing parts, but given it’s history with display issues I’d recommend a full replacement. After a quick google, a replacement display is not an unreasonable price.
sounds like a video card issue, however i would be very worried about the orange glow. please keep us informed what else happens did you try a external monitor by any chance,
