Chosen Solution
I’ve managed to rip out the bit of the ipod that connects to a charger/syncs with a pc. I want to replace it but don’t want to fork out for a whole new logic board as they cost not much less than a new ipod would. So with this in mind, could I buy a cheaper logic board (ie one from an earlier generation and/or cheaper model) and take off the charging port and affix it to the logic board I have now?
you can but you should get a new connector. Sparkfun has them. http://www.sparkfun.com/products/8035 You will need a good soldering iron and soldering wick to install it.
if you’re only after single, you can get them from ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230999376281
Hi, a little self promotion, I follow iFixit and have learned a great deal from them. If you want to try your self, you can but please keep in mind that the 5th Gen Classic is easy to open but the port is not something that can be done on a 1st try. As others have mentioned soldering wick … not going to work! You need a special de-soldering station as the solder is buried through the anchor hole at four points and wick does not get it done … trust me, I have tried … many times…. and then I purchased the correct desoldering station for this repair that works on touch 2/3 and all classics. Leave this particular repair to a seasoned professional that has the right equipment. I run http://www.bustedapple.com (National Mail-in) and http://www.zfixit.com (Local San Antonio TX Site) and you can mail in repair on a classic charge port at bustedapple.com. I have the best price for this repair ($45 + Shipping on a 5/6/7 Classic), easy does it for me …. but the iPod must have have been working prior! Thanks, Manuel
