Have a 1997 chevy c2500 4x4 just changed the break light switch i now have break lights but only in park as soon as truck is put into gear there gone. Fuse fine bulbs fine just replaced break switch …what did i miss??
Diane, there could be a pinched wire in the steering column, you may have to open up(remove trim ) around steering column and check wires. Have a friend watch brake lights as you wiggle wires to locate short/break in wire. You could also unhook shift cable from column linkage and then try shifting to see if brake lights work to verify bad wire up in column area first. If they work with shift cable detached then problem possibly could have something to do with safety neutral or reverse switch under truck. This would be strange but one other forum said it is possible the safety neutral switch itself or wires shorting could cause this. to test this hook shift cable back up by the column and unhook at the transmission, shift and see if brake lights work, if brake lights work check for bad wire/plug/switch out brake light switch. Link below talks of the problem you are having. Good luck. I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button. http://www.justanswer.com/chevy/5gfcl-ch…
Hi, Not certain if this is for your vehicle but did you check the fuse block in the engine compartment? I think that there is also a Stop/Hazard fuse and a brake lamp relay located there as well as the brake switch fuse in the instrument panel fuse block.
