I shut down my system. When I turn it back on the blinking floder with question mark as viewed. Following steps found on apple site and other boards I still an having the problem. When putting in the installation disks I can view the serial ATA and it states cannot be read. My need is to furst capture vital documents I was engaged in. Second fix whatever is causing the challenge. Any help out there? Thanks in advance
It sounds like your hard drive has failed. Boot up from your system installation disk and use Disk Utilities to try to repair it. You may need to replace the drive and restore from your Time Machine backup or other backup. You do have a backup for vital documents, right? We also need to know which iMac you have to get you to the correct parts and guide, please give the last three figures of your serial number found on the bottom of your stand.
