Hi, I’ve just replaced my dead drive and I’m experiencing a blank startup manager (with cursor and no buttons), the machine will not boot from original install media (keeps ejecting it), it will boot in target disk mode… …if left to it’s on devices I get flashing folder and question mark. Reset NVRAM, SCM, OF… …no joy. I’m about to remove the drive to format it and was wondering if there’s anything else you’d recommend. Any additional advise is much appreciated! thank you!

Thank you Dan, I’ve tried that but no joy. We had no joy several other attempts with the original install disks (10.6.2) and retail copy of SL from a friend. Even, with bootable usbs (gpt), restored from original installation disks. Turned out the machine was looking for a newer OS (?????). Upon downloading Mavericks and restoring it into a USB, the startup manager recognized the volume and installed the OS. Tested the optical drive and it’s working fine too…. I’ve stumbled into a couple of similar reports online, pretty strange…

Sounds like you have set the hardware password on the system. Take one bank of RAM out and try again.
