with fresh charge on battery mower runs good but it won t keep the battery charged while you are using it.’’''

Blane, If you know for sure the battery is indeed good, check for a blown fuse if OK and there is a battery/voltage gage on your mower, then the two wires running to the gage are clean and tight as this is a common problem for not charging. If all looks good there recheck all wires and connections from battery, ignition and charging/stator to be clean, undamaged and secure. You may have to pick yourself up a DVOM(digital volt ohm meter) to perform further diagnostics which can be found in the attached links. https://www.briggsandstratton.com/na/en_… http://grounds-mag.com/mag/grounds_mainthttp://smallengineinformation.com/?page_…

Had charging problem with an older cub cadet tractor. Traced wires back to key switch which was faulty. The terminal connections were burned and corroded. Replaced key switch, cut back damaged wires and reattached to proper terminals. Problem solved.
