Chosen Solution
I have replaced the battery with an IFixIt battery replacement. All was pretty straightforward and simple to do. However, on booting up I can’t get it charge or the dead battery icon to go away. -Reset SMC and PMU (Many times). -Unplugged and plugged in battery connector -Charged overnight -Reinstalled OS/ reset disk. The battery stats when booted (with power cord in) are all zero and no battery recognised. It looks like the new battery control board is not reporting in correctly but not sure what to try now.
Unfortunately the same result with two different batteries leaves us with a bad charging circuit. You may try replacing the I/O board where you have part of the power/charging circuit as next and hopefully problem solving step: MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014 I/O Board Replacement
