I would like to know how I may back-up or transfer my music from the 2002 1st generation-scroll wheel, Model 8541, 10GB iPod to my laptop. I have gone to the iPod store and Best Buy and they do not have a transfer device with the correct adapter/port that fits this device since it does not have a USB port. Can someone help me?….PLEASE! Looked into this a dozen times over the past 5-6 years at various times, then give up. Found this site tonight and have hope. THANK YOU & appreciate any insights you can offer.
All your information is on your computer that you used to put it on the iPod in the first place. Just plug your new one in to the same computer and set it up.
backing up the content on the iPod is possible. you have to manage the content manually after you’ve done that - you can access the iPod in finder/windows explorer open the “drive” that is assigned to your iPod and then go to “iPod_Control\Music” - there are folders called F00, F01 - and so on. in those folders is your music - but the files faf names like CHLD.mp3, EXFL.mp3 and so on - this is not a problem, itunes ignores the tintle of an mp3 - it only uses the ID3 tags inside the file you can simply copy those files to your computer - but be aware - copy protected files will still have the DRM stuff in it
I think there is a piece of software for mac called senuti that might do it for you automaticly and name the files correctly according to the ID3 tags.
If your iPod has a Click Wheel and your computer has a USB 2.0 port, you can charge your iPod and sync your library at the same time using the included USB cable. If your iPod doesn’t have a Click Wheel, then you’ll need to use FireWire or the iPod Dock Connector to FireWire and USB 2.0 Cable (part number M9688G/A).
